Underwater archaeologists have discovered a sunken temple and sanctuary off the coast of Egypt that contain ancient treasures. The temple, originally built for the god Amun, was an important site where pharaohs would go to receive titles of power. The now-derelict building was part of the ancient port city of Thonis-Heracleion, which was destroyed by an earthquake and tidal waves. The archaeologists found gold objects, jewelry, and a djed-pillar made of lapis lazuli in the temple. They also uncovered a Greek sanctuary dedicated to Aphrodite, which contained imported bronze and ceramic objects. The findings shed light on the relationships between different cultures during ancient times.
