Super-Earths in Need for Extremly Big Rockets (2018)

In this study, we explore the possibility of space travel from rocky exoplanets, particularly those known as “Super-Earths”. These planets are larger and heavier than Earth, and some may even be habitable and potentially inhabited. However, their higher surface gravity poses a challenge for space-flight. The good news is that chemical rockets can still achieve escape velocities on Super-Earths up to 10 times the mass of our planet. However, for much heavier rocky worlds, the only option may be to use most of the planet as chemical fuel for a single launch, which is extremely risky. We also touch on the idea of launching rockets from water worlds, which would require the construction of alien megastructures.
