Surfactants safely take down mosquitoes without using insecticides

Researchers have developed a surfactant spray that can effectively combat mosquitoes without the need for insecticides. The spray targets the mosquitoes’ natural water-resisting properties, immobilizing them and preventing them from spreading diseases such as dengue fever, malaria, and Zika virus. Traditional methods of mosquito control using insecticides have led to resistance and health issues in humans. The researchers utilized micro- and nano-scale structures on the mosquitoes’ bodies and wings to wet them using safe surfactants. This not only caused the mosquitoes to fall but also blocked their air intake, leading to their demise. The researchers believe this method could be a safe and effective alternative to insecticides.
