According to NEA Research, despite record-level increases in some states, average teacher pay has failed to keep up with inflation. Adjusted for inflation, teachers are making 5% less than they did a decade ago. The biggest one-year pay increases were seen in New Mexico (17.2%), Mississippi (11.4%), and Alabama (8.2%). The national average teacher salary for 2022-23 was $69,544, with California topping the chart at $95,160. Federal funding accounted for 13.2% of school revenue, while per-student expenditure increased to $16,281. The report also highlights enrollment trends, showing modest increases in student numbers across the country.
