Teaching Apple Cyberdog 1.0 new tricks (featuring OpenDoc)

Apple’s Cyberdog was an ambitious web browser and Internet suite that aimed to allow developers to create their own components to run inside of it. It was based on Apple’s implementation of IBM’s System Object Model (SOM), which allowed for an object-oriented approach to document creation. OpenDoc, the underlying technology of Cyberdog, didn’t gain much traction with developers or users, and it was seen as a competitor to Microsoft’s OLE technology. Cyberdog supported various protocols, including Gopher, E-mail, Telnet, Usenet news, and FTP. It also allowed for the embedding of other parts within documents, creating complex and interactive experiences.
