Tech firms must tame toxic algorithms to protect children online

Ofcom lays out over 40 practical steps for services to keep children safer online, including implementing robust age-checks to prevent exposure to harmful content. The proposed Children’s Safety Codes demand tech firms to take significant measures to protect children from content related to suicide, self-harm, and pornography. The new regulations emphasize the need for safer design choices by platforms, including better moderation of harmful content and ensuring algorithms don’t recommend harmful material. Companies that fail to comply with these rules may face enforcement action. The draft Codes also focus on stronger accountability within tech firms and providing more support tools for children and parents.
