The Calculator that spawned the Microprocessor (2009)

In the late 1960s, Busicom Corporation, a Japanese calculator manufacturer, embarked on a project that led to the development of the first commercial microprocessor, the Intel 4004. Masatoshi Shima, an engineer at Busicom, collaborated with Intel to create a simplified computing system using a few standardized chips. Surprisingly, Busicom decided to go with Intel’s proposal over their in-house design, leading to the production of the 141-PF calculator incorporating the Intel 4004 microprocessor. This collaboration laid the foundation for the microprocessor to become a standard component in various products, accelerating the digital revolution that followed.
