LWN has finally swapped its proprietary accounting system, QuickBooks, for the free open-source accounting system, GnuCash. After five years of searching for a better system, they discovered that many of the available complex systems were “unwieldy”, and those based on plain-text files lacked “useful features”. Importing and exporting data was paramount in their choice of accounting system, which was GnuCash, which also had a “minimum of extra complexity”. Although GnuCash is not perfect, it is good enough for LWN and is a lot cheaper than QuickBooks.
