The Epson HX-20 – A Contrarian’s View

The Epson HX-20 is often called “the first laptop” but is actually a contradictory, compromised machine that never fully succeeded despite groundbreaking technology and unique design. Devised in 1980 by Suwa Seikosha, it featured a compact design with a mechanical keyboard, LCD display, printer, and microcassette drive. Despite portable capabilities, it lacked essential software support, leaving users to fend for themselves with little built-in software. The Epson found niche use in vertical markets and remains available today on auction sites. Despite its shortcomings, the Epson HX-20 pushed the boundaries of mobile computing and laid the groundwork for future advancements in the industry.
