The existence of a new kind of magnet has been confirmed

A new type of magnetism called altermagnetism has been discovered, opening up possibilities for high-capacity memory devices and magnetic computers. Previously, there were thought to be two types of magnets: ferromagnets and antiferromagnets. Ferromagnets have strong external magnetic fields, while antiferromagnets have alternating spins. Altermagnets, however, have alternating spins that are the same when rotated from any angle. Researchers at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland have confirmed the existence of altermagnetism by studying the electron structure of a crystal called manganese telluride. This new magnetism has potential applications in computer storage and spintronic devices.
