The Interface of Kai Krause’s Software (2003)

Kai Krause, the designer of Kai’s Power Tools, has a unique and clever approach to interface design. He believes in maximizing the interface by creating full-screen modes and specialized rooms for specific tasks. For example, KPT Texture Explorer is a modal dialog specifically designed for creating textures, and KPT Spheroid Designer is meant for creating special-looking orbs. Krause’s interfaces also incorporate unfolding functionality, where widgets become visible on demand, and MouseOver tools that fade out when not in use. The interfaces also include clever features like MouseDragging instead of value sliders and memory dots for customization. The interfaces also feature transparency and shadows for a more harmonious environment. While these designs were created in the 1990s, they are still impressive and can provide inspiration for modern design.
