In southeastern Ukraine, an explosion that destroyed the Russian-controlled Kakhovka Dam led to the exposure of thousands of artifacts in the region. This event provided an opportunity for archaeologists to explore previously unexplored areas and potentially find significant historical finds, including old boats. Although the discovery of a classic early chaika, an iconic Ukrainian historical boat, was not found, archaeologists did discover a pre-Cossack settlement dugout canoe. This dugout canoe, a direct ancestor of the early chaika, will be conserved and contribute to research on regional boatbuilding evolution. While the dam may be rebuilt, there are efforts to restore the region’s historical and natural landscape.
