In a surprising turn of events, Tulare Lake, the largest body of water west of the Mississippi River, has made a comeback after disappearing 130 years ago. Previously a vital part of the ecosystem and an important stopover for migratory birds, the lake’s return has had both positive and negative effects. Indigenous communities, like the Tachi Yokuts, have celebrated the lake’s return as a spiritual experience and an opportunity to practice traditional hunting and fishing. However, flooding caused by the lake’s resurgence has impacted agricultural workers and surrounding communities. Despite efforts to drain the lake, some believe there is economic potential in allowing it to remain.
