The Lost Script of Rapa Nui

Hidden in a nondescript building in Rome, there is a wooden tablet from Easter Island covered in strange hieroglyphs. Known as Tahua, the tablet is part of the rongorongo script used by the Rapa Nui people. Rongorongo is unusual in that it consists of pictographic characters arranged in horizontal lines, with every other line written upside-down. The history of rongorongo is elusive, but it is believed that it was used before the arrival of the Europeans on Easter Island. Deciphering rongorongo has proven to be a challenge, with various attempts being made to uncover its meaning. Although there have been some partial decipherments, they shed only a dim light on the script’s true meaning.
