The task of converting DC voltages involves complex terminology and math, but the operation is not difficult to understand. Traditional methods such as resistor-based voltage dividers are common in hobbyist projects. An improved method using a transistor-based voltage follower can be more efficient, while feedback mechanisms can further enhance linear regulators. Switched-mode regulators, like charge pumps and buck converters, offer high efficiency and voltage control. Charge pumps operate by rapidly switching capacitors, producing voltage multipliers or dividers. Buck converters use inductors to regulate output voltage, while boost converters raise output voltages. These methods have advantages and limitations that must be considered for optimal performance.
