In the grasslands of Mozambique, an abandoned water tower now houses a colony of bats. Bat researcher Césaria Huó and an entomologist named Piotr Naskrecki visited the tower to study the bats’ social communication. While scientists have long studied echolocation calls in bats, little is known about their social communication. Naskrecki hypothesized that bats, like primates, have different calls to indicate different dangers. Huó and Naskrecki set up cameras and audio recorders to capture the bats’ calls and behaviors. They hope to decipher the meanings behind these calls and build a dictionary of bat communication.
