The Taito Taitan arcade cabinet

In the world of arcade gaming, generic cabinets were popular among operators due to their versatility and cost-effectiveness. These cabinets were designed to accommodate new games without the need for a complete replacement. In the UK, a “chip shop” Jamma cabinet became a staple in many arcades. While these cabinets lacked the artwork and design of dedicated cabinets, there were occasions when manufacturers experimented with unique designs to attract players. Taito’s Taitan cabinet, designed exclusively for the UK market, featured artwork by renowned artist Roger Dean and his brother Martyn. The cabinet designs were inspired by the games housed within and made the cabinets stand out on the arcade floor. The Taitan cabinet, however, had a short lifespan and ultimately faded from the scene.
