The tragedy of mathematics in Russia (2013)

Nikolai Nikolaevich Luzin was a prominent mathematician and founding father of the Moscow mathematical school. He had many notable students, including P.S. Alexandroff and A.N. Kolmogorov. However, Luzin’s reputation was tarnished in 1936 when he was accused of scientific misconduct and depicted as an enemy of the Soviet life. The campaign to discredit Luzin was led by E.N. Kolman and L.Z. Mekhlis, and some of Luzin’s own students participated in the persecution. Despite this controversy, Luzin’s contributions to mathematics and his relationship with his students remain a topic of discussion and debate.
