To free the Baltic grid, old technology is new again

The Baltic countries are taking steps to disconnect their electricity grids from Russia and instead synchronize with Europe. This move comes as a response to Russia’s aggression in Ukraine and its use of energy as a weapon. Synchronous condensers, which stabilize power grids, are being installed to support this transition. These condensers act as an “airbag” for the power grid, providing frequency regulation, short circuit power, and voltage support. The addition of flywheels to boost momentum is another notable tech trend in this field. Upgrades to control systems and transmission lines are also being made to strengthen the electrical systems in the Baltic countries.
