Lara Croft is one of the most iconic video game characters in history, surpassing the likes of Super Mario and Pac-Man with her well-rounded personality and coherent personal chronology. Her roots date back to the first wave of computer gaming in Britain, where Core Design was formed in 1986. The studio’s biggest and most expensive game to date was Tomb Raider, featuring dashing archaeologist Lara Croft. It was an innovative game that emphasised puzzle-solving and platforming as much as combat. However, its marketing used Lara’s body as its main selling point, going against the original vision of the creator, Toby Gard, who eventually quit Core Design in protest.
