Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) has announced plans to build a second chip plant in Japan, with support from the Tokyo government. The plant, scheduled to begin operation by the end of 2027, will bring TSMC’s total investment in Japan to over $20 billion. The first Japanese factory is set to open in February, with volume production starting in the fourth quarter. TSMC, the world’s largest contract chipmaker, stated that the second plant is a response to rising customer demand. The move is seen as a vote of confidence in Japan’s chip-making sector, which has struggled to maintain its competitive edge. TSMC’s expansion in Japan is a part of the government’s efforts to rebuild the country’s chip manufacturing capabilities and ensure a stable supply amid trade tensions between the US and China. TSMC has also been expanding its global manufacturing footprint, with projects in the US and Germany.
