Unity’s Open-Source Double Standard: The Ban of VLC

In December 2019, we introduced the open-source VLC for Unity integration, which allowed developers to build their own media player using VLC technology in Unity-based games. The integration received positive feedback, with many users downloading the assets from the Unity Store for their multimedia solutions. However, our publisher account was unexpectedly banned by Unity at the end of summer 2023, despite attempts to find a compromise. Interestingly, there are numerous Unity assets currently available on the Store that include LGPL dependencies, but enforcement of this rule seems to be random. To cater to our customers’ needs, we have launched the Videolabs Store, where they can purchase the VLC Unity binaries and access flexible multimedia consulting packages.
