The U.S. Agriculture Department has given the go-ahead to California companies Upside Foods and Good Meat to sell chicken made from animal cells. They are the first firms to gain approval for cell-cultivated meat, which is grown in tanks using cells from live animals or stored cells. The process, hailed by advocates as a way of significantly reducing the environmental impact and suffering inherent in traditional meat farming, is prohibitively expensive at the moment and will initially be sold via exclusive partnerships with restaurants in San Francisco and Washington, D.C. More than 150 companies worldwide are developing lab-grown meat from various animal sources.
