USB inventor explains why the connector was not designed to be reversible (2019)

USB Type-A, the traditional USB connector we all know and love, is a bit of a hassle due to its lack of reversibility. Ajay Bhatt, one of the inventors of USB, admitted that this design flaw is the biggest annoyance. However, the decision to not make USB reversible from the outset was a cost-saving measure. To make USB reversible would have required double the wires, circuits, and cost. Despite this frustration, USB has become an indispensable technology, thanks in part to the iMac G3, which popularized USB ports. Now, USB4 is on the horizon, operating solely through the reversible Type-C connector.
