USCRPL’s rocket Aftershock II has broken the international altitude record, reaching further into space than any non-governmental and non-commercial group before. This student-run team from USC Viterbi School of Engineering is known for pushing boundaries with their rockets, setting records by passing the Kármán line in 2019 and now exceeding the altitude record previously held for 20 years. Aftershock II features innovative engineering, including the most powerful solid-propellant motor fired by students and a thermal protection system enabling survival at hypersonic speeds. The team’s success showcases their problem-solving mindset and has paved the way for top roles in the space industry.
