Valve is a wonderful upstream contributor to Linux and the open-source community

Valve and their work on the Steam Deck and SteamOS have been a boon for the open-source ecosystem, according to a presentation at the Linux Foundation Europe’s Open-Source Summit. Alberto Garcia of open-source consulting firm Igalia highlighted the many ways Valve has contributed to the Linux ecosystem, including funding improvements to the KDE Plasma desktop mode and working on AMD color management and HDR. Valve has also made significant contributions to Mesa OpenGL and Vulkan drivers, as well as kernel graphics driver components. They have also been involved in expanding case insensitive file-system support, developing their Gamescope Wayland compositor, and promoting immutable software updates and Flatpak. Overall, Valve’s contributions to the Linux and open-source ecosystems are extensive and wide-ranging, benefiting not just gamers, but the Linux desktop ecosystem as a whole.
