Visualization ‘demonic’ face distortions in a case of prosopometamorphopsia

The rare condition prosopometamorphopsia (PMO) causes facial distortions, with one patient experiencing only in-person distortions, not on screens. A new Dartmouth study published in The Lancet accurately visualizes these distortions. Lead author Antônio Mello highlights the struggle of PMO patients being misdiagnosed with psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia, leading to mistreatment. The study aims to increase public awareness of PMO to prevent misdiagnosis and stigmatization. The novel method used in this research provides a unique opportunity to understand and depict the real-time perception of facial distortions for patients with PMO, shedding light on a condition that is often misunderstood.
