Volcanic eruption started just north of the town of Grindavik, Iceland

An eruption began about four kilometers northeast of Grindavík, north of Sundhöfn in the Sundhöfn peninsula, at 22:17 tonight. Prior to the volcanic eruption, there was an earthquake swarm near Sundhöfn, which began suddenly at 21:00. The authorities have declared a state of emergency. The public has been asked not to park their cars on Reykjanesbraut. The Grindavík area has been evacuated. The length of the fissure was estimated to be around 800 to 900 meters at one point. The estimated lava flow is about 100 to 200 cubic meters per second, which is much higher than previous eruptions on the Reykjanes Peninsula in recent years.
