McDonald’s ice cream machines are notorious for breaking down, with 15% currently out of order in the US and a staggering 32% in New York. But thanks to a victory in the U.S. Copyright Office, commercial food preparation equipment, including McDonald’s machines, can now legally be repaired, challenging manufacturers’ digital locks. Although this is a major win for the Right to Repair movement, the ruling falls short in providing tools necessary for repairs and broader exemptions for repairing other commercial and industrial equipment, leaving many small businesses at the mercy of manufacturers for costly service calls. The fight for full repair rights continues.
