Webb captures iconic Horsehead Nebula in unprecedented detail

The NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope recently captured stunning infrared images of the Horsehead Nebula, showcasing unprecedented detail and complexity. The iconic nebula, also known as Barnard 33, is located about 1300 light-years away and is illuminated by a nearby hot star. It is estimated to have about five million years left before it disintegrates. The Horsehead Nebula is a well-known area for astronomers to study the physical structures of photon-dominated regions and the evolution of interstellar matter. This new imagery, obtained with Webb’s MIRI and NIRCam instruments, revealed small-scale structures and network of striated features within the nebula, allowing for further study of its physical and chemical properties. Webb, the largest and most powerful telescope launched into space, is an international collaboration between NASA, ESA, and CSA.
