Wends of Texas

The Texas Wendish Heritage Museum tells the story of a group of Wends who emigrated from Lusatia to Texas in 1854 under the leadership of Johann Killian. The Wends were a Slavic minority resisting the merging of Lutheranism and Calvinism, leaving their homeland to seek religious freedom and establishing settlements in Texas. The group maintained their culture and language, leading to the preservation of Wendish traditions in Texas through the Texas Wendish Heritage Society and Museum. The annual Wendish Fest, begun in 1988, celebrates Wendish heritage with cultural activities, traditional competitions, and food like Wendish noodles and streusel coffee cake.
