What happened to 3D midair plasma displays?

Science fiction’s promise of true midair pixels has been realized with laser-induced plasma displays. These displays create glowing points of light using lasers that ionize air molecules, offering a mesmerizing visual experience, but also posing safety concerns due to the energy involved. Japanese researchers have now developed a “Fairy Lights” display system that is safe to touch, using femtosecond lasers to generate plasma voxels. When touched, the plasma generates brighter light and even creates a physical sensation. While currently small in size, researchers believe that with further development, this technology could eventually be incorporated into consumer products like phones or wristwatches.
