Generative art can stem from various aspects, even unintentionally. Definitions of generative art should be inclusive, not restrictive, and are meant for discussion rather than strict categorization. Three types of autonomous processes are explored: randomness, rules, and natural systems. Randomness, driven by variables, is a common method in generative art, often using pseudorandom number generators or true random sources for unpredictable results. Rules, whether through instructions or algorithms, can lead to emergent phenomena, such as cellular automata or simulated ecosystems. Natural systems, like condensation or mold growth, can also be elevated as the art itself, though less common in generative art. Various intersections with data sources, artificial intelligence, and automatism are also noted.
