Geothermal power has long been overshadowed by other renewable sources such as wind and solar, making up only 0.3% of global electricity generation. However, the recently passed US infrastructure bill set aside $84 million to develop enhanced geothermal systems (EGS), an experimental form of geothermal technology. Geothermal power provides consistent electricity output and has the potential to become a baseload renewable source. While traditional geothermal resources have already been tapped, researchers are exploring EGS to engineer new sites. However, drilling deeper and reaching sufficient temperatures pose challenges. With the right policies and technological advancements, geothermal power could contribute nearly 9% of all electricity generation in the US by 2050.
