Leon Theremin created the Theremin in 1920, using high frequency oscillators that change frequency when an object is close. It became popular in 1960s and 70s music, as well as horror films. The Theremin has two ariels for pitch and volume control, but calibration and drift issues led to the development of light Theremins. With the advent of Time Of Flight Sensors (TOF), a new type of Theremin – the Luminiferous Theremin – was born. This modern version is accurate, compact, and customizable with microprocessors. The project is open source, with plans for more features. The name pays homage to the original “Etherphone” and the medium light travels through.
