In June 1993, the University of Colorado version of sudo introduced the iconic message: “We trust you have received the usual lecture from the local Systems Administrator. It usually boils down to these two things: #1) Respect the privacy of others. #2) Think before you type.” Todd C. Miller, the maintainer of CU sudo, is credited with this commit, which also included the famous warning, “This incident will be reported.” The history of the source code suggests that the messages may have originated from Bob Coggeshall or Evi Nemeth. Additional warnings were added over time, including a quote attributed to Stan Lee/Uncle Ben in 2004. The original version of sudo appeared in the UNIX System Administration Handbook, emphasizing the importance of responsible use. The roots of this software date back to posts in net.sources and unix-pc.sources archives from the 1980s.
