The mobile phone industry is plagued with fraudulent robocalls, corrupt employees accepting bribes, and the sale of customer location data. SIM-swapping attacks are on the rise, resulting in cyberheists worth millions. Despite promises of security and privacy, the major wireless carriers have lost control to cybercriminals and scammers. Google has had to discontinue a feature due to carriers blocking messages from unsolicited robocalls. AT&T faces lawsuits over unauthorized location data sharing and a bribery scheme. With the FCC slow to act, solutions like SHAKEN/STIR authentication are proposed. Surprisingly, some African carriers have implemented measures to combat SIM swap thieves effectively. Despite the urgent need for privacy laws, Congress has yet to pass any substantial legislation on the matter.
