Why Nature will not allow the use of generative AI in images and video

Nature, a scientific journal, has announced that it will not be publishing any visual content created with the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI). While Nature acknowledges the potential of AI, it believes that the use of such tools is not transparent and poses issues relating to consent, privacy, and intellectual-property protection. The journal will continue to allow text created with the aid of AI but will require authors to include appropriate caveats. Nature fears that the use of AI without careful consideration may undermine centuries-old conventions in science and jeopardize content creators’ protection against exploitation.
