Willingham sends Fables into the public domain

Fables, the comic book property by Bill Willingham, has entered the public domain as of September 15, 2023. Willingham decided to give away the intellectual property to everyone due to ongoing issues with DC Comics, who he claims have violated their agreements with him over the years. This move allows Fables to fall into the hands of many good people, and it is Willingham’s first test of a process he believes should be implemented for all intellectual properties. Willingham is unbothered by what DC Comics will do now, as he has given them ample chances to resolve their disputes. However, his own contracts with DC are still in force, so he cannot unilaterally end them. The new owners of Fables, on the other hand, have complete rights over the property and can do whatever they want with it. Willingham looks forward to seeing what they will create.
