Winamp, under new ownership, released its “Legacy Player Code” on September 24 for developers to contribute to its evolution. However, the repository was abruptly deleted due to issues with code licenses. The licensing terms are restrictive, allowing only official maintainers to distribute modifications. Even original developer Justin Frankel found the terms “absurd” and “terrible.” Despite this, the code has been forked over 2,600 times. The release contained anomalies, including portions of other projects’ code and potentially leaking the source code for SHOUTcast. Additionally, proprietary packages from Intel and Microsoft were found in the release.
