Scientists recently discovered a 20,000-year-old deer-tooth pendant in the Altai Mountains of Siberia containing preserved DNA from a woman. This groundbreaking find sheds light on early human migration patterns, with the DNA suggesting a connection to people across northern Eurasia. The study, published in Nature, used innovative techniques to extract DNA from the pendant, made from a species of deer tooth. Surprisingly, the DNA was absorbed from contact with the wearer’s skin, providing valuable insight into the wearer’s gender and heritage. This study is a stepping stone for future research on extracting DNA from various archaeological artifacts.
