Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan’s online rant spurs threats to supes, police reports

CEO of Y Combinator, Garry Tan, sparked controversy with a late-night rant on Twitter where he wished death upon several San Francisco supervisors and posted photos of his private liquor stash. Two supervisors received threatening letters at their homes and two more filed police reports as a result. Tan later apologized for his comments, which referenced a Tupac Shakur song. Some supervisors who were targeted have experienced previous instances of hate mail. Many lawyers and judges believe that Tan’s comments, while offensive, are protected under the First Amendment and do not meet the legal definition of a death threat. Tan is a significant campaign donor to moderate causes and candidates in San Francisco.
