German hosting provider Uberspace has taken down the website of YouTube-ripping software, youtube-dl, following a court order in a copyright infringement lawsuit filed by Sony, Warner, and Universal. The software, hosted on developer platform GitHub, had been the target of the RIAA, who claimed it violated the DMCA. Uberspace, although not hosting the software, was held responsible for the website that linked to it. The court ruled that the software bypassed YouTube’s download protection, violating European intellectual property law. Uberspace plans to appeal the decision, citing concerns about privatized censorship and the strong legal defense of the software’s legality.
