ZF makes magnet-free electric motor uniquely compact and competitive

ZF has developed a magnet-free electric motor called I2SM (In-Rotor Inductive-Excited Synchronous Motor) that offers ultra-compact design and performance on par with permanent-magnet synchronous machines (PSM). This motor is a sustainable and efficient alternative to PSM motors, as it eliminates the need for magnets and rare earth materials. The inductive exciter inside the rotor enables energy transmission for the magnetic field, reducing losses and CO2 footprint in production. The I2SM also eliminates drag losses and offers better efficiency at high speeds. With this innovation, ZF aims to create resource-efficient and powerful electric drives for sustainable mobility.
