Zwentendorf Nuclear Power Plant: Finished in 1978 but was never used

In the 1970s, Austria’s future of power production was almost dominated by nuclear plants until a public outcry stopped it. The Zwentendorf nuclear plant was completed but never turned on due to anti-nuclear sentiments. The modern facility cost around a billion euros and was equipped with a boiling water reactor and radioactive rods. After a referendum in 1978, Austrians voted to ban all nuclear power plants, leading to the dismantling of Zwentendorf. Ironically, the empty complex is now used for film shooting and security training, serving as a reminder of a significant moment in Austria’s history.
