Microwaving plastic baby food containers can release a significant amount of micro- and nanoplastics, according to recent research from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. The study found that heating these containers in a microwave can release over 2 billion nanoplastics and 4 million microplastics per square centimeter of container. While the health effects of consuming these particles are currently unknown, the study also showed that three-quarters of cultured embryonic kidney cells died after being exposed to the particles. The World Health Organization has recommended limiting exposure to such particles. The researchers hope that their findings will encourage manufacturers to develop plastic containers that release fewer micro- and nanoplastics.
