MathWorks Professor of Mathematics Gilbert “Gil” Strang ’55, who recently retired from MIT after 66 of his 88 years at the institution, has had a “tremendous impact on the teaching of mathematics”. Strang, known for his easy smile and engaging teaching style, has taught linear algebra to a third of MIT’s entire student body. He has written 20 books, including an introduction to linear algebra, which has been translated into French, German, Greek, Japanese, Portuguese, and Chinese. Strang’s courses have been viewed over 20 million times on MIT OpenCourseWare, and he has received 17 awards, including the 2020 Irwin Sizer Award for the Most Significant Improvement to MIT Education.
