AI intensifies fight against ‘paper mills’ that churn out fake research

Advancements in AI technology, such as image and language generating software, are making it harder for publishers to tackle the growing problem of fake scientific papers produced by paper mills. During a summit on 24 May, experts in research integrity discussed the challenge of detecting AI-generated content and developed a joint action plan. There were also suggestions for additional strategies such as the uniform submission of raw data and awareness days for researchers. Paper mills have recently seen a rise in cases of ethics violations, which have escalated to ethics teams for investigation.
