Hipólito Mora, vigilante crusader against Mexico’s cartels, killed in ambush

Hipólito Mora, a founder of Mexico’s “self-defense” movement and former lime farmer, has been killed in an ambush, adding to the ongoing violence in the country. Mora helped lead a rural uprising against narco-traffickers a decade ago, but some of the self-defense groups later faced accusations of human rights abuses or were infiltrated by the cartels themselves. Mora, who had spoken out against organized crime, had expressed concerns about his safety and said that only improved security or his own murder would stop him from speaking out. His death has prompted tributes and condemnation from political figures.
