Microsoft announces purchase of 315k tonnes of CO2 removal

Microsoft has signed a long-term contract with Heirloom, a Direct Air Capture (DAC) company, to purchase up to 315,000 metric tons of CO2 removal over several years. This agreement represents one of the largest carbon dioxide removal deals to date and provides crucial funding for Heirloom to scale and reduce the cost of its DAC facilities. The deal also establishes one of the first bankable carbon dioxide removal agreements, opening up a funding mechanism for future projects. Microsoft’s investment in Heirloom supports its goal of becoming carbon negative by 2030 and highlights the importance of scalable carbon removal solutions in combating climate change.
